Listens to their house’s old pipes

like they’re a dotty old uncle

who’s flushed a toilet that

better fill up then shut up

or hears babbling coming from

another water line then realizes

it’s the timed sprinklers

and of course there’s the 2 a.m.

liquid whisper that awakens me

his insomnia now also mine

as I decide if I should wait

to see what kind of trouble

he may be causing or get up

and go check on him hoping

he’s wandered back into bed

and fallen sound asleep
