talking with strangers about the world

we live in leads to a boring end

unless it shifts to our inner worlds

discussions of passion pull me in

someone’s truth is an opportunity

to play a tender give and take

secrets also reduce the volume

in a room   the din fades as a mouth

moves closer to an ear

a cocktail party that’s as frivolous

as the names of the drinks served

pushes me into a corner

if I’m lucky  someone waits there

to unzip their life

while I move to unbutton mine
