Do Fish Sniff? Dec. 27, 2023

as I introduced three new koi

into my city of goldfish

I noticed one of mine drift closer

at first   nonchalant   like we would

eyes looking away   the sideways sniff

the I-can’t-show-you-I’m-interested whiff

then a bolder nose-point

gills showing a deeper inhale

vision now locked on target

lastly    the canine’s move

magnetically   to the orifices

a hair’s breadth from contact

after that    a free for all

when everyone moves into

everyone else’s personal space

and as they swam off

I imagined the ladies

firing questions about diet

you know    the usual gossip

between new fins
