how else to get love

disguised as approval

in those clingy early years

do what you’re told

and the spigot would stay open

nothing like baths of soothing words

after our dog Chips    I was

the best well-behaved pet

in the Hunter family

now I’m quite a bit more feral

and fun and enjoy poking others

and myself with humor

I discovered that’s one great

disguise that love uses -

a quick wit

it’s like knocking

on a stranger’s door

with a ball and saying

Hi - wanna come out and play?
