lilies-of-the-valley

are a sure scent of heaven

and a way into the kingdom

similar to roses

except more crack-in-

the-window than front door

where roses must knock

these paperwhites can slip us

through a poor seal in the pane

tell us to keep quiet

have a look around

no pictures or souvenir-taking

just breathe deep and gentle

and we can hang around

for a bit

so we do again and again

until we’re discovered

and chased out

the same way we snuck in
