among shadows sunrise is the moment

the church’s can visit the rectory next door

while the old maple’s slides over for a chat

with its cousins across the street

the pair of patio lounges’

can even take a dip in the pool

as the morning progresses

goodbyes are long and lingered

till they must turn and report to

the employ of their material masters

in summers a full 8-hour workday

by sunset their off duty again

the hand’s silhouette from the statue of Christ

fronting the priest’s residence blesses

the cathedral’s massive front door

one young maple’s reaches over to say

“goodnight uncle”

only the two recliner shadows seem alone

but like any old married couple

they sense when the other is near

if not then they’ll wait till a favorable arc

of the moon allows them to fall asleep

touching
